What Is a Gong Bath (Gong-Session)?

Event Locations | Reserve a Gong Bath

Jens Geese prepares participants for an immersive gong bath and sound meditation at Studio M, Saint-Paul, France.

A gong bath is an immersive sound experience of about one hour — a sound journey also known as a gong session or gong meditation. You lie down or sit comfortably and listen to the sounds of several gongs. No prior knowledge, meditation experience, or special physical requirements are needed.

At the beginning, I explain which physical, emotional, or inner perceptions may arise during a gong bath. I prepare the participants to meet the sounds without expectations and not to judge immediately what they perceive. A simple breathing exercise helps your attention move away from daily concerns and prepares body and mind for the sound journey. This preparation makes it easier to enter the experience consciously and to receive the greatest possible benefit from the session.

After that, you make yourself comfortable on your mat. A blanket and a small pillow help you stay warm and relaxed during the sound journey.

I play with three to five gongs. At the beginning and at the end, I complement their sound with the handpan and other intuitive instruments. They allow a gentle entry into the sound journey and guide you just as gently back out of it at the end.

The gong sounds do not follow a fixed program. I perceive the people in the room, the atmosphere, and the moment itself, and allow the sound journey to arise from this. This is why every gong bath is different.

A gong does not create one single, predictable tone. With each strike, a many-layered spectrum of sound unfolds. The mind cannot follow this abundance like a familiar melody. In this way, thoughts can become quieter, attention can loosen its hold on daily life, and the body can enter deep relaxation.

At the end, I let the sounds fade away slowly. You receive enough time to become aware of your breathing and your body again before sitting up. This quiet ending is an important part of the session and helps you integrate the experience.

“Through the sound of the gong, the melody of one’s own life can find expression…

an echo of the communication between mind and soul in the present moment.”

How Does a Gong Bath Affect You?

Gong bath with Jens Geese at Studio M in Saint-Paul 974, La Réunion, with Oetken gongs, Rémi Bonneau gong & deep relaxation.

The effect is experienced differently by each person. Some participants enter a very deep state of calm or fall asleep for a while. Others experience inner images, memories, physical sensations, or emotional relief. There is nothing that has to be achieved. Even a session in which you simply listen attentively can be an intense experience.

From the beginning, I have made it a habit to speak personally with participants after my gong baths about how they experienced the sound journey. These conversations help me understand the different effects of the sounds more precisely and allow me to refine my way of playing in an ongoing process.

Over the years, I have noticed that certain patterns of experience often repeat themselves, especially with people who take part in a gong bath for the first time. I use this knowledge to prepare new participants well for the sound journey. This helps them better understand their perceptions during the session, enter the experience with trust, and receive the greatest possible benefit from it.

For many people, the first gong bath is initially a discovery. The sounds and their physical effect are a new experience for which there is not yet any personal reference. This is why part of the attention often remains in an observing state at first: What is happening right now? How are these sounds created? And so on.

For this reason, I offer short presentations after my gong baths for those who are interested, in which I show and explain how the different sounds are created.

This is also why I recommend that new participants, whenever possible, take part in at least a second gong bath. Once the experience has become more familiar, it is easier to let go of the observing attitude. Participants who come for the second time often describe that they experience their second sound journey in a very different way, entering much more deeply into relaxation, letting go, and the meditative state of the gong bath.

Regular participants often report that, over time, they find their way into deep relaxation more quickly. As a longer-lasting effect, they experience more inner calm and clarity, as well as a more conscious way of dealing with stress in daily life.

After the session, I also take time for personal conversations. Participants can share their impressions, ask questions, and calmly find their own way of understanding what they have experienced.
